-“Pres. Boakai Must Apologize”, Sen. Chea
President Joseph Boakai continues to face criticisms for his recent ‘dog barking’ comments.
The latest criticisms come from Sinoe County Senator, Augustine Chea, who is demanding that the President apologizes to the Liberian people, adding that such comments are a sign of what he calls, ‘leadership failure’.
“When you are going somewhere and there many dogs are barking at you, don’t stand to stone each dog, because that might delay your progress,” President Boakai noted.
President Boakai made the remarks at a cabinet meeting during which he urged members of his cabinet to be distracted by critics.
Posted on his official Facebook page, the Sinoe Senator’s statement was posted on his official Facebook page; Senator Chea said his demand for an apology from the President comes in the wake of mounting public backlashes the Liberian Leader’s remarks have generated.
“The President should have chosen inclusive, non-demeaning imagery and avoided comparisons that reduce critics to animals (dogs). That is insensitive and dehumanizing,” Chea wrote.
“President Boakai must apologize,” He maintained.
In the wake of Chea and others’ criticisms, some Liberians, including supporters of President, have argued that his remarks were simply a metaphor or an idiomatic expression that did mean to call the Liberian people dogs as it is being interpreted in some quarters.
Senator Chea has argued that the broader public reaction is predominantly critical, dismissive and disrespectful.
