Patrolman Wessey Weah must by now be regretting the alleged act in his cell at the Sanniequillie Central Prison where he has been remanded pending prosecution.
Patrolman Weah was formally charged on allegation of rape and abuse of a ward. He was remanded at the correction facility on Monday, May 18, 2026, following a preliminary investigation conducted by the Women and Children Protection Section of the LNP.
The authorities said the alleged incident occurred on May 9, 2026, while the victim was under police custody at the Ganta Police Station.
Nimba County Police Commander, Larmie Mendin, speaking on the matter said they are not taking case lightly mainly at a time the alleged victim was under the protection of the State.
Commander Mendin said the legal proceedings are expected to commence in the coming days as prosecutors’ finalize preparations to present the case in court.
he said the alleged act constitutes a violation of Section 14.70 of the Penal Law of Liberia, which states in part: “A person commits rape if he or she has sexual intercourse with another person by forcible compulsion, or with a person who is less than eighteen years of age, or with a person who is mentally incapacitated or physically helpless.”
The law further provides that rape is a felony offense punishable by a lengthy term of imprisonment with enhanced gravity where the victim is a minor or under lawful custody.
” No individual is above the law, particularly those entrusted with public safety,” Commander Mendin noted. He assured the public that the former patrolman will be fully prosecuted to serve as a deterrence to others.
The Nimba County Police Commander urged the public to continue to repose confidence in the police, assuring citizens that the LNP remains committed to protecting lives and properties.
