-Burkinabes’ Presence  Sparks Anxiety

The County’s Senator, Thomas Nimely Yaya, raised the alarm Tuesday, informing his colleagues that the exodus of Burkinabes into Liberia, particularly Grand Gedeh County, is alarming and has sparked serious humanitarian and logistical concerns in the County.

He informed the body 60,000 Burkinabes have in recent time entered Grand Gedeh.

Although the Senator’s claim of an exodus is not validated by facts, he is calling for a prompt intervention of the relevant agencies of the Government.

Senator Nimely, this Paper has heard, is also calling for a two-week period to allow authorities and relevant agencies to make proper resettlement arrangements for the incoming Burkinabés. So far there hasn’t been any official government statement or position on the matter.

Reports of a huge number of Burkinabes entering into Liberia through illegal means are an old age problem in the Southeastern Region of Liberia.

Similar reports of Burkinabes’ illegal entry Liberia also heard during the respective regimes of former Presidents Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and George Weah, but the problem persists with no government seem to have a solution.

Analysts have attributed the influx of the Burkinabes into Liberia to many factors, including search for better agriculture opportunities and search for safety due to an unabated political turmoil in Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso is currently facing a severe conflict characterized by   violence from Islamist insurgents, humanitarian crisis and political instability.

In 2025, the conflict resulted in the displacement of over 2.3 million and additional 6.3 million needing humanitarian aid.
