Rescuers in Grand Kru County have saved from drowning three persons in the Dorbor River and are in search of another whose whereabouts still remains unknown.

The Dorbor River is in the Town of Klaipeda in the County.

Drowning in the River is an old aged problem and the citizens are asking the Central Government to intervene to save lives.

In 2024, the bodies of a 19-year-old pregnant woman, Precious Kantan, and a 16-year-old girl, Joanna Targbe, were reportedly found four days after they went missing on the Dorbor River.

Also in the 2024 incident, two persons narrowly escaped death and two others drowned while  crossing the river from Putu Town to Nyankunpo in Bolloh Statutory District on a floater.

Also in 2024, a 39-year-old man, Moses Williams, alias “ZB,” drowned in the Dorbor River under similar circumstances after the rope attached to the floater was reportedly unattached due to strong waves.

The Dorbor River is a major crossing point that allows citizens to access markets, services, and commercial centers in the Bolloh Statutory District.

“Drowning in the Dorbor River is becoming too frequent,” a local resident said. “Every year we lose people and nothing has changed”.

Community members also say the river poses a major threat to local economic activity and development, as it restricts safe movement between towns and limits access to essential services.

Citizens and residents have now issued renewed SOS calls, urging members of the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus to advocate for funding in the 2026 National Budget for the construction of a bridge over the Dorbor River.

They argue that a permanent bridge would significantly reduce recurring fatalities and improve economic and social connectivity across the affected districts.

As search efforts continue for the missing victim from the latest incident, residents say their hope now rests on urgent government action to prevent further loss of life.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the recent drowning.
