It seems to be that the stories about drugs being sold in Liberia and ship through Liberia from foreign countries are not going away any time soon. Since the return of democracy in Liberia in 2005, there have been several drug busts, including the last two: 19 and 327 million dollars respectively. As the topic of the current discussion about drugs in Liberia, these two are the main focus points at the moment. 19 million dollar drugs were seized at the Robert International Airport in March 2026 as it was getting ready to be loaded onto the plane for outward shipment to Europe and beyond. While that discussion has been going on since March, 2026, now come the latest case of drug bust in the country with total street values 317 million dollars. Isn’t this so staggering? It is so gigantic in magnitude.
Under normal circumstance, we should be looking to the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) because it is the government’s entity charged with the responsibility to investigate and unearth everything about the distribution of illegal substances on the streets of Liberia or if such is to be shipped oversea. That is to say, if it is allowed to do its job without political influence or interference. While we may still be waiting for credible investigation by the LDEA, it seems like politics have taken over the whole matter or investigation. The issues of drugs in Liberia has been deeply politicized by the members of both the ruling Unity Party and the opposition, CDC.
When photos surfaced of Vice President Jeremiah Koung with some of the alleged masterminds of the 19 million dollar bust, some CDC supporters started to spread the message, negative or positive, that Vice President Jeremiah Koung is linked with the traffickers. Even Rodney Sieh of Frontpage Africa appeared on Spoon Talk show to buttress this argument. During his appearance on Spoon Talk show, Rodney Sieh said repeatedly that while he was not accusing the VP of involvement in the drug trafficking in the country, he argued that the Vice President being seen in photos with some of the alleged traffickers will fuel “public speculation” of his link with individuals connected with the multi-multimillion-dollar drug investigation.
While this 19 million dollar drug bust was still being discussed, another drug bust has been reported. This is said to be the biggest drug bust in Liberia’s history with total street values of $317 million dollars.
