UNDER THE UNITY PARTY-LED GOVERNMENT, there is planing to dismiss thousands of Chiefs and City Mayors in Grand Kru County. They will be victims for the execution of what the government through the Ministry of Local Government called "decentralization plan".
UNFORTUNATELY, PUTTING PEOPLE out of jobs just because you feel Grand Kru County has many cities is tantamount to witchhunt, because decentralization as we know it is not meant to abolished cities which have been created since the 60s, 70s, 80s and of current.
THERE ARE MANY QUESTIONS border on this plan the Ministry needs to answer.
DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAVE THE resources to settle the arrears of the Chiefs and City Mayors they are planing to put out of jobs?
DOES THE MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT has the power to undo what came to being through Legislative instrument without Legislative approval?
UNFORTUNATELY, THE MINISTRY’S ACTION plan is in sharp contradictions to the President’s commitment of putting all the chief on payroll and also to settle the arrears of those who are on payroll but we're not taking pay. We are sure this decision is in the best interest of the country.
TO ABOLISHE CITIES WE FEEL is a plan attack on the peace loving people of Grand Kru simply because somebody with authority in the government feels Grand Kru County has so many undeserved cities, but what they forgotten to know is, these cities didn't come to being by themselves. They are legitimate cities and if you are interested not seeing them exist, do the right thing.
IT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING, THIS exercise is a nation wide initiative but Grand Kru County is high on the list of cities to be abolished as the Ministry of Local Government have unilaterally set her threshold. It is not known if the Local Government seeks legislative action to cancel cities.
IT IS OUR BELIEVE THAT CANCELATION of cities is million miles away from the reality of decentralization, instead, it is a witchhunt.
WE KNOW THAT THE CITIES to be canceled were created by Arts of the Legislature, and if Local Government would want to canceled, the Arts that created them should be repealed.
IN AN EFFORT TO ACTUALIZE government' s plan, in Barclayville, Jul 2, 2026 the Acting Minister of Local Government Edward K. Mulbah on Wednesday defended the Government’s decision to reduce Liberia’s cities from 141 to 33, saying the decentralization and city rationalization plan.
ACCORDING TO HIM, PUTTING PEOPLE out of jobs and abolishing cities will make government save resources, accelerate development, and improve citizens’ livelihoods.
THE POINT HERE IS, IF government wants to save resources at the detriment of the citizens, she should reduce wasteful costs, cut down the unnecessary foreign travels, reduce allowances as Ministers, Ambassador, Legislators, and more, and use the proceeds wisely.
TO PUT CITIZENS OUT OF JOB is the worst decision to take. Abolish that plan and look up to the Liberia Revenue Authority to raise the just and legal revenue of our country.
