HOW FAR IS THE DRUGS INVESTIGATION?
There are several trending issues border on national interest which have claimed our attention that we feel compelled to speak to or write about. The issue of the influx of narcotic drugs in our country is not an issue to overlook, because if we allow only the government of Liberia to handle this drugs issue, we will surely depend on a broken stick.
Can you imagine, the officials of government who suppose to ensure that drugs are kicked out of Liberia are the very ones been conflicted, using their official assigned vehicles to escorting drugs to its hideout into our country. Security officers who suppose to ensure that this country is secured are in cohort with the drugs lords to damage our youthful generation just for personal gains at the disadvantage of the country’s future generation.
Can you imagine, to tell you how our security sector is vulnerable, the Deputy Prison Superintendent at the Monrovia Central Prison or the South Beach was ordered arrested and detained on the order of Prince C. Johnson for allegedly using his phone for the Colombian suspect to communicate to his drugs cartel and allegedly received money linked to the network.
The question is, how the security officers of this country taking the issue of drugs to be?
The unprecedented influx of drugs in this country is a serious threat to our national security. Drugs have money, 65 % (percent) of our population is vulnerable due to illiteracy and unemployment. Drugs Lords and their network in country are monitoring and working to know and understand the weaknesses and strength of our security apparatus.
From the scene of unfolding development within the security sector, it will be very advisable that the President should overhaul leadership of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the National Security Agency (NSA) where the culprits and suspects are mainly concentrated.
There is a need for overhaul in the LNP, including the suspension and investigation of the Inspector General, Col. Gregory Coleman. Gregory from the look of things had infested his boys into the DEA to allegedly execute missions for him, unfortunately, his surroundings has been conflicted. This places us in a state of predicament about who to trust. It is a dangerous sign for police officers to be mixed with criminals. These ugly developments concerning the gross betrayal by our officers has the propensity to scare potential investors away. A country becomes attractive to investors through a combination of political stability, robust legal frameworks, economic freedom, and favorable market conditions.
With the prevailing complication in the security apparatus, no investor will be brave to put his money or business at risk. Frankly speaking, Investors prefer countries with stable governments and predictable political environments. Political turmoil, frequent changes in leadership, or civil unrest can deter investment, as they increase risks associated with doing business. This is while we are doing our almost best to encourage our government to adequately address the issue of drugs head-on by involving our international partner and Liberians informed throughout the investigation process.
A strong legal system that protects property rights, enforces contracts, and resolves disputes fairly is crucial. Investors seek assurance that their investments will be safeguarded by clear and enforceable laws. Nearly every year we fall short of due process and rule of law by evaluation index of reputable organization. Can you imagine, because the American government doesn’t trust our legal framework, Washington is reportedly asking that drugs suspects from Liberia must be put on trial under American jurisprudence in the United States of America. If this happened, it sends a very bad image of incompetence of our government out there.
Another area of interest that usually attracts investors has to do with the promotion of Economic Freedom by the government. This means that countries that promote free markets through economic laws, low trade barriers, and minimal government intervention tend to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI). Economic policies that encourage entrepreneurship and competition create a favorable environment for investors.
A large and growing consumer base is attractive to investors. Countries with rapid economic growth, like India, present significant opportunities due to increasing private consumption and a rising middle class.
Instead of fighting to develop our Skilled Workforce as a nation to attract investors, what we are doing now is killing and damaging the youthful workforce Liberia has through the influx of drugs. The issue of workforce is a one of the factors that we need to direct our strength and strategy because a well-educated and skilled labor force enhances productivity and reduces the need for expatriates. Countries that invest in education and training are more appealing to foreign investors.
Adequate infrastructure, including transportation, communication, and utilities, is essential for businesses to operate efficiently. Countries with developed infrastructure attract more investment as they facilitate trade and reduce operational costs.
We need to show and demonstrate economic strength and stability because low inflation rates, stable exchange rates, and sound fiscal policies contribute to a predictable business environment. Investors are more likely to invest in countries that demonstrate economic prudence and stability.
