-To Observe World Press Freedom Day
Liberian journalists have this Monday, May 4, 2026, assembled in Kakata City, Margibi County, as they joined their colleagues across the globe to commemorate World Press Freedom Day celebrated May 3 every year.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day to create awareness about the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of speech enshrined under article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A statement issued by the Press Union of Liberia said the Union is actively involved in this year’s celebrations of the Day it says runs from May 3 to 5 in Kakata City. Before we went to press, members of the PUL and others had started trooping into Kakata to participate in the celebrations.
The journalists’ Union said it has established two key committees to lead the celebrations and oversee the national media awards recognizing top journalists and media intuitions for their works in 2025.
According the PUL statement, the event will be decentralized and inclusive, with regional media leaders appointed to ensure transparent and effective planning. The statement said this year’s World Press Freedom Day is chaired by Christiana Sonpon, with co-chairs representing Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount and Montserrado Counties. The National Awards Committee, the PUL said, is chaired by Torwon Solunteh Brown and co-chaired by Solomon Ware, while Varney Karneh serves as secretary general. The committees, it said will be supported by journalists it said are media practitioners it said are in program development and publicity.
The celebration is expected to include a parade, an indoor program and a panel discussion under the theme; ‘Sustainable independent Journalism Press freedom in the Digital Age’.
World Press Freedom Day is intended to honor the coverage, integrity and professionalism of journalism of Liberian journalists and celebrate the courage, integrity and professionalism of journalists globally.
