It was during celebrations marking World Press Freedom Day in Kakata, Margibi County.

The discussions were frank and to the point. Both leaders, Julius Kanubah, President of the Press Union of Liberia, and Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman, spoke their minds on the factors responsible for the lukewarm relationship or tension that has always persisted between the local media and law enforcement agencies, particularly the Police.

PUL President, Kanubah, observed that the tension between the Police and the media has, in most instances, sparked off during public protests and elections-related events.

Mr. Kanubah said while the two parties play separate roles during such events, they must collaborate for not only their common good, but also the common good of the general public.

Kanubah reminded the Police that they are charged with the responsibility to protect the peace and stability of the Country to create a safe environment free of intimidation and harassment.

The PUL President’s remarks were in reaction to alleged Police brutality against journalists performing their duties.

While Kanubah called on the Police to respect journalists, he also warned journalists against disrespect against law enforcement officers. “Let’s work together to enhance the rule of law and lasting peace in our Country,” the Press Union President noted.

He used the forum to commend the Police Chief for his continued support to the Press Union of Liberia, further asking him to support the Union’s headquarters project.  Meanwhile, the PUL has deferred its annual award event to an unspecified date.

The guest of honor and Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman, in remarks reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to protect journalists in the performance of their reportorial duties.

“No journalist should be intimidated or harassed for their work,” the Police IG emphasized durinqqqqg the events that marked World Press Freedom Day.

IG Coleman said the Police view the media as a strategic partner, adding that his administration is taking deliberate steps to improve its relations with the media.

“The Police stand ready to work with the PUL and all journalists to deepen its relationship with the local media,” IG Coleman reiterated.

“The media is our number one partner and we cannot succeed without you,” the Police Chief also said.
