National Housing Authority, NHA, Managing Director, Florence K. Geegbae, has said the entity is introducing new initiatives aimed at attracting diaspora Liberians to invest in the housing sector.
Speaking last Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Madam Geegbae said Liberia currently faces a significant housing deficit, requiring hundreds of thousands of new housing units to address overcrowding and population growth.
She said the country needs approximately 200,000 new dwelling units to reduce overcrowding, while an estimated 512,000 additional housing units will be needed by 2030, citing a World Bank report.
According to Geegbae, the NHA has been working with private-sector partners to develop affordable housing designs, including three-bedroom and two-bedroom units, as well as two-bedroom duplexes. She said the designs have been approved by the Ministry of Public Works, allowing developers to proceed once the required permits and other procedures are completed.
She explained that housing development requires several stages, including the preparation of building designs, bills of quantities and approval from the Ministry of Public Works. Developers must also obtain the necessary land-related clearances before construction begins.
Geegbae said the National Housing Authority (NHA) recently participated in the ASPIRE conference in the United States, where discussions focused on encouraging Liberians in the diaspora to return home and invest in housing development.
She said the conference identified two major challenges facing diaspora investors: a lack of trust in land transactions and a knowledge gap about the housing and estate-development process in Liberia.
To address these challenges, the National Housing Authority (NHA) is developing a Housing Investment Portal, which will serve as a single online platform where investors can access information on land verification, permits, cost calculators and directories of licensed professionals.
The portal, she said, will guide investors from the initial inquiry stage through project completion.
The National Housing Authority (NHA) is also developing an Estate Development Roadmap, which will provide step-by-step information on the process of developing residential estates, from land acquisition to obtaining occupancy permits.
Geegbae said the authority is also working on an energy partnership program to help diaspora investors navigate land ownership, zoning and permitting challenges.
The National Housing Authority (NHA) Managing Director disclosed that the authority has negotiated and commenced the purchase of approximately 578 acres of land, with some located in several counties.
She also announced that the authority is preparing for the development of hundreds of housing units, with contracts expected to be signed soon. According to Geegbae, 3,340 civil servants have already enrolled in an NHA housing program. The initiative is expected to provide different payment options, including cash sales, mortgages and rent-to-own arrangements.
She said the NHA is also working with the Liberia Land Authority to develop housing communities specifically for diaspora Liberians. Under the proposed arrangement, large parcels of land could be developed into communities with housing, schools, health facilities, markets, businesses and other essential services.
Geegbae said the initiative is intended to provide diaspora Liberians with greater confidence and reliable information when investing in the country. The National Housing Authority (NHA) is also working to introduce housing insurance for homes developed through government-funded and public-private partnership programs.
Geegbae said discussions are ongoing with an insurance company, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding expected soon.
She further disclosed that the NHA has established partnerships with international organizations, including Shelter Afrique Development Bank, to explore cooperation in affordable housing.
