His sudden death was shocking to many of his friends and family members, who had seen him earlier before news of his death broke out.

Mr. Tumbey, a former representative candidate and resident of Montserrado County Distruct-9, crumbled to the floor while attending a worship service on Sunday, the reports said.

 Eyewitnesses said he was immediately sped off to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. The cause of his death is still unknown.

The late Tumbey, the reports said, was a well-known and highly respected person in both the public and private sectors.

Before he unsuccessfully contested a seat to represent the Montserrado District-9 in the Legislature, he headed the National Customs Brokers Association of Liberia from 2012 to 2018 and was credited for his advocacy for fair trade practices and that helped in strengthening the brokerage sector, according to the reports.

Others who knew him described him as a compassionate leader and a grassroots mobilizer.

“He was a man of the people,” said one devastated supporter from Matadi.

“Whether in business or politics, Ivan always put the community first. To lose him so suddenly, and during a church service, is just unbelievable,” another resident lamented.

Meanwhile, former colleagues from the National Custom Brokers Association have begun expressing their condolences, remembering him as a visionary leader, who they recalled, shaped their industry.
