“I WILL VOTE AGAINST TWEH’S CONFIRMATION”

-Sen. Snowe

Edwin Melvin Snowe, Senator of Bomi County, has bluntly said he will vote against the nomination of President Joseph Boakai’s Minister of Defense-designate if his nomination touches ground on the floor of the Senate.

Tweh, now former Minister of Justice, if confirmed by the Senate, will replace Geraldine George, who served in the position for less than three years.

Senator Snowe said Cllr. Tweh’s alleged dismal performance as Minister of Justice does not make him a suitable choice to serve the post of a minister of defense.

According to Snowe, as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Liberia, he politicized the Country’s justice system, an allegation the former Justice Minister has not officially reacted to.

Snowe, a staunch supporter of former President George Weah, further alleged that that former Justice Minister Tweh’s tenure consistently failed to demonstrate the independent and objective legal counsel expected of him as the government’s principal legal adviser.

He noted that the astute corporate lawyer’s record has a tendency to undermine the professionalism, discipline and political neutrality required within the Armed Forces of Liberia.

“My opposition to the former Minister of Justice is not personal, but punctuated on my assessment of his public record,” the Bomi Senator noted, adding that the defense minister-designate cardinal responsibility is to protect the integrity of the military or the AFL.

Snowe also said as far he is concerned, Tweh’s record does not generate the confidence necessary to lead the country’s military, but his critics say, he does not have moral standing to question the credibility of the former Minister of Justice, pointing to the Bomi Senator’s past record with the erstwhile National Patriotic Front of Liberia or NPFL of former President Charles Taylor. Others say he has his constitutional right to vote in favor or against the Minister of Defense-designate, while also reminding him that he only has one vote.
