The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged Liberian girls to speak up and assert themselves in decision-making spaces, recounting an experience in which she struggled to be heard during a meeting while serving as Deputy Minister.

Speaking Friday, October 16, at the “SHE IS THE WAY” one-day girls’ mentorship program in Monrovia, the Minister said young women must have the confidence to express their views and demonstrate their abilities, even in environments where their contributions are overlooked.

She recalled attending a meeting where she was the only woman among the men present but was repeatedly prevented from contributing to the discussion.

The Minister said she eventually stood up and insisted on being allowed to speak, adding that the solution to the problem under discussion emerged after she was given the opportunity to contribute.

She said the experience reinforced the importance of self-confidence and determination, particularly for girls preparing to enter professional and leadership positions.

The Minister encouraged participants to believe in themselves, remain focused on their ambitions, and develop the discipline needed to overcome challenges.

She also cautioned the girls against decisions and distractions that could jeopardize their education and future opportunities, urging them to remain committed to their goals despite criticism and setbacks.

“Learn to believe in yourself,” she urged.

The Minister commended the Mandela Cooper Foundation for organizing the mentorship program and expressed the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection’s willingness to partner with the Foundation on initiatives aimed at empowering girls.

The “SHE IS THE WAY” mentorship program brought together girls and accomplished women to encourage personal development, confidence, and preparation for future opportunities.
