A local pro-democracy group, Liberia Emancipation Movement, LEM, has threatened to take to the streets on October 23, 2026, to demand the unconditional resignation of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr. and Vice President, Jerimiah Koung, on allegations of constitutional breaches, economic hardship wide spread corruption and drug abuse.

LEM in a statement read by its National Chairman, Rufus Towah Sam, said it will in partnership with Liberia Against Poverty mobilize its members and other Liberians to demand the Boakai-Koung administration’s resignation because public confidence in the regime has eroded.

The statement said the Liberian people have endured what it calls crushing poverty and bad governance since the Unity Party-led government assume state power.

The group also cited nepotism, a breakdown of public services and rising prices of basic commodities and the alleged proliferation of dangerous drugs as the cardinal reasons why the President and the Vice President should resign.

The Liberia Emancipation, LEM, also said President Boakai and his Unity Party-led Government had promised to redeem the Liberian people from abject poverty drug abuse and destitution, but have failed on those promises.

LEM further accused the Boakai-Koung administration of failure to reclaim Liberia’s land from Guinea through military means, but rather than engage the Guinean forces militarily, the Government sits and watches Guinea infringe on the sovereignty of Liberia.

The Liberian Government has repeatedly said that it is pursuing the matter diplomatically and has no intension to deploy its military near the disputed land near the Country’s border with Guinea, but LEM has in its statement urged the Government to take military action.

The group is asking all Liberians, including civil society organizations, commercial motorcyclists, civil servants and disadvantage youths to join the October 23 protest to put pressure on President Boakai and Vice President Koung to unconditionally resign from office.

Just a few weeks ago, the local pro-democracy group, STAND of former national chairman of the opposition CDC, Mulbah Morlu, took to the streets on allegation that government was doing business with drug cartels.

The STAND’s protest came just a few  weeks after the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, LDEA, confiscated a consignment of cocaine worth over three hundred million United States Dollars. The government has vehemently rubbished the allegations and said it is investigating to bring the perpetrators to justice.
