The chairman of the National Taskforce to combat illicit mining activities, Abraham Kromah, has said the responsibilities of the Taskforce is to strengthen the protection and management of Liberia’s natural resources.
Mr. Kromah said President Joseph Boakai on June 26, 2026, instructed the Taskforce to combat illicit mining activities with an initial one-year mandate.
Speaking Tuesday at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing, Mr. Kromah emphasized that the taskforce comprises representatives of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), Ministry of Justice (MOJ), Ministry of Mines and Energy (MOME), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), among others working along.
Kromah further explained that the task force is designed to provide a coordinated response to challenges involving Liberia’s natural resources, including illegal activities and environmental concerns.
He said the Armed Forces of Liberia is providing tactical support, while the Liberia National Police is responsible to maintain public order and respond to civil-security situations.
The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), he added, is charged with the responsibility to assist with immigration-related enforcement, particularly in situations involving individuals entering or operating illegally on Liberian soil.
For the Ministry of Justice, Kromah said it has the responsibility to provide legal and enforcement support, including assistance with evidence management and prosecution of cases arising from the task force’s operations.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy he also indicated, will contribute its technical expertise on mining operations, financial matters and related regulatory issues, while the Environmental Protection Agency will focus on environmental laws, community impacts and the assessment of environmental violations.
Mr. Kromah emphasized that the task force is not limited to security operations, but is intended to bring together the technical, legal, environmental and enforcement capabilities of several government institutions.
He said the collaboration is part of the government’s broader effort to protect Liberia’s natural resources and ensure that activities involving those resources comply with national laws and regulations.
