-Speaker, Deputy Speaker Asked To Resign

Tensions are rising in the House of Representatives as members of the Reformists Movement demand the resignation of Speaker Richard Koon, Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah and the Ways and Means Committee chair over 12 alleged financial and administrative violations.

The lawmakers accuse the leadership of failing to account for more than $5 million in legislative funds and lawmakers’ benefits, while also alleging budget alterations, misappropriation and unauthorized use of funds intended for constituency activities and development projects.

The group, which reportedly includes lawmakers from both the majority and minority blocs, presented its resolution to the vice president during a weekend meeting after a convoy of about 64 vehicles traveled to the vice president’s residence.

Sources said the vice president expressed concern over the allegations and requested one week to investigate, consult with relevant parties and respond to the lawmakers.

The lawmakers have threatened to pursue the removal of the House leadership under legislative rules if their demand for resignation is not met.

The development brings back fresh memories of the sustained pressure from members of the House that ultimately resulted into the resignation of Grand Kru County Representative, Fonati Koffa, as Speaker.

It all started when some members of the 55th legislature on October 17, 2024, decided to remove him on several counts, including, conflict of interest, alleged dishonesty in the representation of Liberia at ECOWAS Parliament, overspending his budget  during his tenure as Deputy Speaker, alleged alteration of the 2024 national budget and history of being convicted and disbarred in North Carolina for embezzling approximately half a million United States Dollars.

For current members of the House of Representatives, they want Speaker, Richard Nagbe Koon, and Deputy Speaker, Thomas Fallah, on allegation of diverting monies intended for their benefits, but neither Speaker Koon nor Deputy Speaker, Fallah, has publicly responded to the allegation.
