THE INTOLERANT 2026 81st UNGA: LESSON LEARN
As I sit here in a global remote but powerful founding member state of the United Nations, Liberia, watching unfolding events at the 2026 81st UNGA couple with presentation of messages from world leaders in the United Nations General Assembly, I am left with doubts as to whether the objective of the convergence of world leaders and subsequent presentation of global issues raised by them would be met or achieved.
I am wondering because I noticed some high degree of tension bordered on bullying among the leaders, as protests becomes uncontrollable in the conference hall and even around the perimeter of the hall. Leaders in the hall have shown prejudice and disrespect to each other by a walked-out-protest against their colleagues who have mounted the podium on stage to discuss issue of national and global importance. Citizens who were out of the conference hall of this year 2026 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) were out there protesting against their own leaders and leaders of other nations who they reportedly have problem with.
The United Nations by virtue of its architectural administrative structural is still struggling with a deficit of inequality. There are other world leaders who believe that it is unfair for only five nations to be on the Security Council as its permanent members, while very few are non-permanent members.
There are issues the United Nations is still struggling with such as the dissolution of the International Criminal Court (ICC), inequality, inability to immediately intervene to bring hostilities being perpetrated by stronger nations against weaker ones, like in the case of Russia and Ukraine. The United States of America and other powerful nations with military and numerical strength of influence are very keen to the effect of the ICC in contemporary political, economic, social and cultural global advancement, as they feel that they cannot subject their citizens to ICC jurisdiction.
This year UNGA should serve as forum in which world leaders will meet to develop approachable and workable strategies that will afford citizens the opportunity for economic, and social advancement for humanity the world over.
With this current trend of global preconception shown by world leaders in the 2026 81st UNGA, and followed by their respective citizens in various locations of New York, the venue of the conference, I am very much optimistic that leadership of the UN will reach a decision that will safeguard future or succeeding forum and even protect leaders who have gone to the UNGA to present cases of their respective countries without harassment or fear of intimidation. But if cue action is not taken, I foresee the UN ending like the League of Nations in a non-distant future.
From my keen observation, about the 81st United Nations General Assembly is gradually degenerating into different direction instead of its set goals and purpose. This is the United Nations we expect to be an organization of tolerance, not vengeance where the rights of humanity would be disrespected. This is the UN where we hope to see the Robert Rule of parliamentary procedure being respected and observed accordingly instead of bullying each other. This is the UN that would set the pace of composed human interactions, unfortunately, it becomes a place world leaders could not afford to see each other with tolerance and meekness.
