THE 2026 81ST UNGA IS ONGOING, with delegates presenting to the President cases of their countries of origin. At the conference, every country has its purpose for attending the 81st UNGA, which is an annual global event that brings world leaders together.
FOR US IN LIBERIA, WE ARE not discussing the substantive issue raised by our delegation at the 2026 81st UNGA, such as calling for Africa permanent representation on the Security Council, gender equity, etc. instead, what is most trending is whether or not Liberia is one of the seventy-seven countries that walked out in protest against Israel for her alleged atrocity in Iran.
IT IS REPORTED THAT THE MINISTRY of Information had denied the assertion that Liberia delegates have walked out, but the question that remained unanswered up to press time is, were the Liberia’s delegation present when Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Niteyahud mounted the podium to speak, or do they boycott (stay away) in a way of avoiding being seen walking out?
WHATEVER THE CASE, THE GOVERNMENT needs to be factual about its decision whether she did walk out, boycott or stay in the hall to listen to Israeli side of the story or allegation. What interest us most is, Israel and Liberia have had close ties like in the case with Liberia and the United States of America. We have enjoyed this moral and diplomatic relationship for years uninterrupted. The question to the government is, why did your delegates leave the seats empty simultaneously at the time? To be frank, the excuses the government is giving in defense is illogical. How can government tell us that only Liberia’s Deputy Head of Mission was seated when the Israeli Prime Miniter was on the stand. Then the question is where was the President, where was the Foreign Minister, where was Amb. Brown? Where did they unanimously go that was much important instead of sitting behind the Liberian flag in the hall? Until these questions are answered by our government, the citizens will continue to ask you to adequately explain and give the factual picture.
WE EVEN HAVE A NOTION IN Liberia here, that it was Liberia’s vote in the United Nations during one of its assemblies that qualifies the State of Israel to be recognized by the United Nations as a sovereign state. The question is, what went wrong that Liberia has to walk out of Israel if it did happen? We are claiming that Israel is our making in the same world body, how come now that we have chosen to destroy our own making, allegedly?
90 COUNTRIES HAVE EXERCISED tolerance to remained in the hall and listened to the Israeli story, while 76, allegedly plus Liberia makes it 77 countries that have prejudged Israel with a guilty verdict of human rights abuse and have left or stayed away, which was not a right thing to do.
SOMEONE MIGHT WANT TO PLAY devil advocacy by saying that walking out of session is not important because the General Assembly was not making decision at that moment that could affect every nation. It is important to note that at the General Assembly, every country has equal right, but when it comes to decision making, the Security Council which comprises of five countries has the greatest power. If any of these five countries did not walk out, they remained seated, this means that Israel has achieved her purpose for attending the 81ST UNGA. She had delivered her message to the United Nations with the presence of the full bench of the Security Council was well articulated and is not troubled with the absent of insignificant countries.
