Local businessman, Vetekeh Kekula, is asking the Boakai administration to consider the reduction of taxes on imported goods.

Mr. Kekula, Chief Executive Officer of Vate Vate Designs Services, thinks  high import taxes contribute to rising prices and place additional burdens on businesses and consumers.

Kekula made the call during the weekend when he was honored as an outstanding public servant of the year 2026. The ceremony was held in what is known as ZayZay Community in Paynesville.

He said a reduction of taxes on imported commodities would help lower the cost of goods on the local market and makes it easier for local businesses to operate.

The local businessman further said high taxes and other charges associated with imports increase the overall cost of doing business, forcing traders to sell goods at higher prices to recover expenses.

He challenged the government to review the current tax structure on imported goods and consider measures that would support businesses to save consumers from excessive price increases.

Kekula also called for stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector, noting that a favorable business environment is essential for economic growth, job creation, and increased investment.

He emphasized that tax reductions should be accompanied by effective measures to prevent smuggling and ensure that businesses comply with the laws.

Mr. Kekula thinks the reduction of the tax burden on imported goods would help encourage more investment in Liberia’s private sector and contribute to improved economic opportunities for Liberians.
