If what this Paper is hearing is confirmed, all suspects arrested in connection with a recent drug bust put at the cost over three hundred million United States dollars will be transferred to the United States for prosecution.
Unconfirmed reports say American investigators working alongside local security agencies are demanding the living bodies of the accused to be taken to the United States to face prosecution.
According to the reports, WASHINGTON is contending that if the suspects are prosecuted in Liberia, there is a possibility that they will bribe their way through to freedom.
This Paper could not readily contact the relevant agencies of the government to confirm the reports, but diplomatic source has hinted that WASHINGTON is pessimistic about a fair trial in Liberia, considering the Country’s weak justice and security systems.
Other sources say the cartel has set aside a staggering U$10 million United States dollars to bribe judges and other judicial workers.
The Liberian Government has so far released no formal statement to confirm any communication from Washington seeking the transfer of the drug suspects to the US for prosecution.
Callers who phoned in on a local radio talk show have also expressed fear that if the government dares to prosecute the suspects here, majority of them will bribe their way out of prison and flee the Country.
It can be recalled, the Minister of Justice, Oswald Tweh, a few months ago requested Washington to assist Liberia with the ongoing investigations the Country does not have the sophistication to handle the matter on its own.
