-PUL Warns Government

The Press Union of Liberia, PUL, the parent body of the Liberian media, doesn’t seem to be taking lightly Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman’s recent allegation, that the Liberian media is being paid by drug cartels to undermine ongoing investigation into who all have link to a huge consignment of cocaine recently discovered by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agent, LDEA.

At a well-attended general meeting on Monday, August 3, 2026, members of the Union unanimously agreed that the Police IG or the Government proves its allegation or face a legal action.

Members of the journalists union mandated the leadership headed by Julius Kanubah to engage lawyers and seek appropriate remedies as the Government is yet to prove its allegation.

During Monday’s meeting, other suggestions including a media blackout against the government’s functions were made, but were deferred until following consultation with the legal team of the Union.

Meanwhile, a press statement by the PUL leadership quoted its members as saying they are concerned about the damaging nature of the Police Inspector General’s allegation that he made while speaking on behalf of the Government’s Joint Security Investigative Taskforce.

The PUL warns that such unsubstantiated allegations erode public trust, endanger the safety of journalists, and undermine the credibility of the media. The membership further noted that the IG’s statement should not go without challenge, stressing that it may have been made out of frustration and intended to distract attention from heightened media reports implicating senior security and government officials in collaboration with the cartel.
