-Ahead Of 179th Independence Day

Barely few days away to the observance of the Country’s 179th Independence Anniversary, its embassy in Washington, D.C., has officially kicked off the celebrations with a special lecture during which the country’s founding visionaries were honored to underscore the deep historical ties between Liberia and the United States.

Joel Maybury, former Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia and a distinguished retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, delivered the keynote address.

Mr. Maybury delivered a compelling presentation on President Joseph Jenkins Roberts and First Lady Jane Rose Roberts, illuminating their pivotal roles in Liberia’s establishment, diplomatic outreach, and educational development.

He also underscored the enduring nature of U.S.-Liberia relations, a bond that predates Liberia’s independence.

In a rare and generous gesture, Maybury presented the Embassy with original historical documents, offering tangible links to the nation’s early years and further enriching the archival record of Liberian statehood.

Ambassador Al-Hassan Conteh, who hosted the event, expressed profound gratitude to the speaker and attendees for their engagement. “It was a great honor and privilege to participate in this lecture, officially launching the commemoration of our 179th Independence Anniversary,” Ambassador Conteh said.

The lecture was followed by a spirited discussion that produced actionable recommendations for historical preservation. Participants proposed initiatives to safeguard Liberia’s invaluable records from its first century as a sovereign nation, as well as a call to protect and commemorate the final resting place of First Lady Jane Rose Roberts, located in London, United Kingdom.

“My sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Maybury and to all who participated in this enriching dialogue,” Ambassador Conteh added.

“As we continue our Independence Anniversary celebrations, I wish all Liberians a joyful 179th Independence Anniversary and extend warm congratulations to the people of the United States on the 250th Anniversary of their Independence.”
