-MPC’s Freeman Chases CDC To G. Gedeh
Simeon Freeman, political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change, MPC, decided to travel to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, to participate in programs marking the 22nd anniversary of the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change, CDC, after news broke out that former President George Weah, has begun a search for a running mate in the pending 2029 presidential elections.
A Verity News online report had quoted the former President’s chief of office staff, Lenn Eugene Nagbe, as saying that the CDC is engaged in discussions with key political figures, including the MPC’s political leader and several others, amongst them, Weah’s own former Vice president, Jewel Howard-Taylor, ahead of 2029 for a possible pick of a running mate.
Some observers say Freeman’s decision to join the CDC’s celebrations in Zwedru is a demonstration of the MPC political leader’s desperate quest for power, while others say it is a show of opposition solidarity.
Freeman has contested at least three presidential elections in Liberia, but flunked in all of them and has since been more critical of all Unity Party governments than the Charles Taylor and George Weah’s respective governments.
Following the 2023 presidential elections, the MPC’s political leader, out of anger, took a bulldozer to the Coconut Plantation Community near Mamba Point in Monrovia and broke down homes and business centers on grounds that the land on which those structures were sitting was his land and that those occupying it voted for UP’s Boakai and did not vote for him.
Unconfirmed reports say the MPC’s political leader traveled to Zwedru on the invitation of the CDC, while some insiders of the opposition Party said he lobbied for his attendance.
The CDC anniversary celebration in Grand Gedeh is expected to attract thousands of partisans, political leaders, community stakeholders, and citizens from across the county and beyond.
Party officials say the event represents an important opportunity for political engagement, democratic solidarity, and dialogue among Liberians committed to the progress and development of the nation.
The reports say during his visit, Mr. Freeman will engage a broad cross-section of the county’s population, including traditional leaders, elders, market women, youth groups, community representatives, and other stakeholders.
An MPC statement says as part of his engagements, Freeman is expected to visit the county’s intellectual center, where he will interact with young people and participate in a thought-provoking discussion on leadership, governance, economic transformation, and the future of Liberia.
According to the statement, the MPC leader will grace the CDC anniversary program and make appearances on several radio stations across Grand Gedeh County, where he will interact with journalists and citizens on issues affecting the nation.
