DON’T ONLY EVICT, COMPENSATE

News of a plan by the Liberian Government to reclaim the land on which what is called the Zayzay Community in Paynesville City is not only disturbing, but also raises concerns about the thousands of citizens expected to be made homeless.

The National Housing Authority has in a statement said the land is government-owned and that the time has come to reclaim it for development purpose.

NHA’s Managing Director, Florence Geegbae, broke the disturbing news early this week, triggering anxiety amongst the residents.

Why we support the Government’s development initiatives, we urge authorities of the National Housing Authority, NHA, not to only evict the struggling residents, but must also compensate them handsomely for resettlement.

What we also do expect is for the Government to, without any delay, embark on whatever plan it has to develop the land in question, because uprooting thousands of residents by breaking their homes without any plan, would send the wrong signal.
